TLDR

TOO LONG DIDNT READ!

JUST CHILLIN LIKE A VILLIAN!

Its official there is a day within the year that purely just celebrates laziness and encourages us to be lazy for a whole 24 hours!

It’s a good thing today is not that day otherwise I doubt on the above basis I would be bothered to actually do any research or even write anymore!

On this note I decided to share my thoughts and findings prior to the 10th August in preparation for doing absolutely nothing!

Laziness worldwide has become an epidemic.

The excessive usage of mobile phones has made us lazy; lazy in talking and having a proper conversation, instead we break down words into text talk and use a selection of emojis to express ourselves.

When we retweet or send tweets they need to be no more than 140 characters made up of #cryptic #cannotbebotheredtotellyouallaboutitsowilljustplaceoneorafewwordssoyouhavetoworkitout

We live in a nation of ‘TLDR’ critics (too long, didn’t read) and ask yourself when was the last time you read a book; cover to cover or witnessed someone else reading a book?

Gone are the days of commuters reading newspapers/magazines/books which have been swapped for staring at screens, texting or using apps that don’t consume either time or energy!

Even meeting that someone special in our lives is now done in the main with the swipe of a finger.

But should we really feel bad about laziness? Or as research has shown there are reasons why being lazy could be good for you!

For a word defined as “an unwillingness to use energy”, an awful lot has been expended in considering it.

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that's the stuff life is made of. - Benjamin Franklin

Our obsession with being lazy can be traced right back to the Christian sin of sloth; Sloth is the desire for ease. Whatever we do in life requires effort. Everything we do is to be a means of salvation. The slothful person is unwilling because of the effort it takes to do it. Sloth becomes a sin when it slows down and even brings to a halt the energy we must expend in using the means to salvation.

In other words, laziness can be a form of rebellion or of self-affirmation; it just depends who is using the word, as well as the class, gender and race of the person being described.

Back in day; idleness was seen both as a commodity and as a symbolic capital that defined a noble lifestyle

Nowadays, though, the concept of laziness has been re-cast.

In the 19 century it was used to distinguish between the “undeserving” poor and the rest of us and such attitudes persist today in lazy descriptions of the “workshy” on benefits, contrasted with “hard-working families”.

But research has shown that laziness and boredom have a vital role to play in society.

When we are freed from the shackles of conscious restraints, we may see things differently and look at new ways of doing things.   It can be a catalyst for change and help us cope with information overload.

Rather than a negative sign apparent laziness can be the symptom of an active mind. It’s common for people who are gifted to come across as bored or underachieving as they require more stimulation.

However, evidence has shown that for people to perform to their peak ability they do need to experience a certain amount of arousal or anxiety. Too little and they become bored and careless, and too much could mean that the stress impairs their performance.

In an ideal world our mantra should be 'quality over quantity', with spare time left to rest and think, not just to produce!

Being lazy should be a time used to regain control over one’s own body and one’s own time.

There are other more flippant reasons to why being lazy can be seen as a positive rather than a negative;

Lazy people consume less making them in the main eco warriors due to their reduced consumption and are by nature more environmentally friendly!

Who can be bothered to go shopping?

Who can be bothered to get in the car and drive?

If on the rare occasions laziness allows us to get behind the wheel - Lazy People are safer as driving fast takes a lot of effort.

Being lazy also causes less noise pollution as they spend most of their time horizontal either sleeping or contemplating with little effort or results.

Lazy people promote world peace as its just too much hassle to sign up to the Army or Navy or in fact anything and then actually get up to go and fight! Need a lie down!

The lazy person also really cannot be bothered with the career ladder, as even the first rung seems so far away and requires so much effort and energy that it allows others to have those career opportunities thus unknowingly providing others with the missed opportunities they cannot be bothered to pursue.

Whereas others pay good money to learn how to meditate or invest time and energy to be trained how to stare into space and empty their minds; for a lazy person this just comes naturally; no debit or credit card required!

And finally, lazy people don’t demand, there’s nothing 'urgent' or marked as 'important' and certainly no 'to do' lists in sight, so its highly likely that the 10th August will just pass them by undetected completely off their radar, as their just too busy being lazy!
