BOOK OUT YOUR SPARE TIME .....

When was the last time you read a book?  What was it called?  If the answer is 'I dont know' or 'I cant remember', then it's safe to say it was a while ago and no, a magazine doesnt count as a book and flicking through the pictures making your own stories up isnt the same!

Every year the 6th September is a day observed to encourage people to read books of their choice.

While this is not a public holiday, many people mark this day by picking their favourite book and spending the day reading and what a choice there is.

So why read - what are the benefits?

Reading has a number of significant benefits so read on and it might get you reading or reading more ....

👍Mental Stimulation

Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power.

Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase 'use it or lose it' is particularly apt when it comes to your mind.

👍Knowledge

Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information which you never know when it will come in handy and usually does as even gaining a better understanding of trivial facts can turn into a conversation opener avoiding those awkward moments life has a tendency to throw at you.

The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you become to tackle any challenge you may ever face.

👍Improving Your Memory

When you read a book, you have to remember so much, characters, their backgrounds, as well as various plots and sub-plots that weave their way through every story. Amazingly enough, every new memory you create forges new synapses (brain pathways) and strengthens existing ones, which assists in short-term memory recall as well as stabilizing moods.

👍Reducing Stress

It all just fades away as you lose yourself between the page of a in a satisfying story. A well-written novel can quickly transport you to another place distracting you and keeping you in the present moment whilst letting any tensions simply drain away allowing you to relax

👍Expanding Your Vocabulary

The more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, and inevitably they will make their way into your everyday vocabulary.

Being articulate and speaking with self-confidence can be a massive boost to your self-esteem.

👍Increased Focus & Concentration

When you read a book, all of your attention is focused on the story—the rest of the world just falls away, and you can immerse yourself in every fine detail you’re absorbing.

👍Peace &Tranquility

In addition to the relaxation that accompanies reading a good book, it’s possible that the subject you read about can bring about immense inner peace and tranquility.  Good for mental health, it can also lower blood pressure and increase a sense of calm.

Ahhhhh ....... what are you waiting for?
